Houston McCuaig

Houston teaches 7th and 8th grade math at Roots Community School and brings both expertise and heart to her classroom. She has a strong background in Secondary Mathematics Education (Grades 5–12), with a B.A. in Education and a Master’s degree in Curriculum Design and Instruction.

Houston brings eight years of teaching experience in both middle and high school classrooms. She began her career in Spokane, WA, as part of a founding team of teachers opening a school focused on project-based learning. She later transitioned to teaching in an asynchronous learning environment and founded a tutoring business designed to support students who struggled with traditional learning methods. These experiences deepened her passion for project-based learning and student-led problem solving, which continue to shape her approach at Roots. She is recognized for empowering students to take ownership of their learning while fostering resilience, curiosity, and confidence.

Her combination of expertise, creativity, and dedication makes Houston an inspiring teacher and a trusted mentor for her students as they prepare for the transition into high school and beyond.

“I love being a part of the Roots community. This is such a refreshing, healthy, nurturing, environment and I love teaching each day. My goal is to continue to build on this wonderful foundation by developing students’ confidence in their ability to learn, grow their capacity to persevere, and inspire a curiosity about life.”
