Roots Community School
Education In Chelan, WA

Roots Community School was created to provide quality, child-centered education in Chelan. We provide project-based, individualized, and comprehensive education for preschool, elementary school, and middle school students.

The Roots Community School Education team has grown over the years, and we’re grateful to have these dedicated, powerful educators and change-makers on our team.

Roots Community School’s Humble Beginnings:

  • Roots Community School was a grassroots effort by local families. We started with one teacher, one helper, one classroom, a handful of kids, and a lot of parent volunteer help.

The vision was clear – to cultivate generations of humble, tenacious, and innovative learners through individualized, responsive education in Chelan.

  • The path to building a school was less clear – there were so many obstacles to overcome and so much work involved in creating a school from only a dream.

Parents, the teacher, and numerous volunteers laid the groundwork for a non-profit, state-approved school. As the groundwork was being laid, the first Roots Community School students were having a fantastic year of school.

Roots students had their first experience in a multi-age, small classroom environment where the curriculum and lessons could be tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. They were experiencing education like they never had before.

Students learned lessons they had previously missed, were challenged in areas where they had previously been bored in school, and had ample time outside for fresh air and exercise. Having a small class also meant field trips could be planned on short notice anytime a real-world learning opportunity was offered.

  • The support from families and our community has been phenomenal from the very beginning. We continue to be inspired and supported by countless people from all over the state who believe in the Roots Community School vision.

We’ve grown from a one classroom school with 12 students, into a six classroom school with over 70 students enrolled. We’re honored to continue providing high quality education in the Chelan Valley, and expand as we’re able to allow even more students this unique educational opportunity.
