Roots Community School Winter Update 2018

Back to School with a Big Surprise!

Roots students returned from winter-break with a big surprise in store, a new classroom!  Parents and community members volunteered over the 2 1/2 week break to apply fresh layers of paint and move the classroom downstairs, where they have a larger and brighter space to enjoy.

My son exclaimed upon picking him up from his first day back, “It is absolutely beautiful!”

Other comments from kids included, “Best first day back ever!” And “I LOVE it!”

The new classroom is sectioned off into 5 cozy spaces.  This includes a snug little reading nook with comfy couches students lounge on while engaged in a good book; a large kitchen space for science, cooking, art, and breaking bread together; and several others spaces with large bright area rugs decorated, of course, with their impressive art pieces and projects.  Watching them scoot around this wonderful space in their slippers after months of dedicated innovation is a great joy; it’s exciting to think of how this school will continue to grow and expand.

As we have moved the school downstairs, Roots Community School now has several spaces available for rent upstairs.  We are currently finishing up a few renovations which should be done in the next couple of weeks.

We also have plans in motion to begin renovations to turn the 1906 sanctuary into a community gym, open for use by the public!  More details to come as the project moves forward.

Current Theme

The current theme is Native Americans and Roots students have been busy learning about different NW tribes.  On Fridays students spend some time in the kitchen and have had the opportunity to make a couple of different traditional Native American meals including Sukatash.  They are also studying the sun and moon and how Native Americans used these tools to tell time which assisted them with their crops amongst other things.  Continuing with the thematic based lessons, students have used this theme in math, science, and reading/writing.

Welcome to New Roots Students and 2018/19 Enrollment

We would like to offer a big welcome to 3 new families to Roots Community School!  We now have 16 wonderful students.  Welcome Jonah, Paeton, Logan and families!  It’s been awesome to have you all join us and we look forward to the years ahead watching Roots students share experiences and cultivate their gifts.

For those of you who are interested in enrolling your child/ren into Roots for the 2018/19 school year we are hosting two parent information nights, Wednesday January 17th 5:30-6:30pm and Tuesday January 23rd from 5:30-6:30pm.  Here you will have an opportunity to receive information about the school, ask any questions you may have, and check out the new amazing space!  If these times do not work for you you may email info@rootscommunityschool.com to set up a school-time visit.

We are currently half full and enrollment begins on February 1st for students K-5.  We hope to see you there!
